Laurence

Laurence
(d. 258)
   Saint and Martyr.
Laurence was one of seven Deacons in Rome during the reign of Pope Sixtus II, who died during the persecution of Valerian. According to legend, he was asked to give up the Church’s treasure. In response, he assembled together the poor of Rome and declared ‘These are the Church’s treasure!’ As a result, he was roasted to death on a gridiron. Most scholars do not hold this tale to be historical, but none the less Laurence with his gridiron is one of the most popular of the saints.
